"Hosanna to the Son of David!" Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" - the people shouted to Jesus, carrying palm branches in their hands. "Hosanna" means "Hail," "Hail to God!" It was an exclamation to persons from whom the people expected special favors. This is why the crowd greeted Jesus with this cry, recognizing him as the Messiah-King.
Jesus does not hide His Messianic calling, and knowing all that lies ahead of Him, Jesus follows the path laid out by His Father, fulfilling the prophecies of old. On the day of His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Zechariah's prophecy was fulfilled: the King "righteous and saving, meek, sitting on a donkey and a young ass" enters Jerusalem.
But Jerusalem did not recognize the day of his visitation, for the people, blinded by worldly expectations, were waiting for the Warrior King, and the Peacemaker King was coming to meet them.
